An excellent engineer needsmore than an excellent education; engineers should feel responsibility for their surrounding environment and understand their role in society as “agents of change” who can apply their knowledge and skills for the benefit of humanity. As educators, it is our responsibility to encourage our students to be socially engaged, thuswe havemade social involvement a cornerstone of the educationwe offer our engineering students. We also believe it is our obligation to actively contribute along the entire national K-12 STEM education continuum, with the goal of reaching every part of the country, particularly the geographical and social periphery. To attain these goals, Afeka established a Social Involvement Unit dedicated to fostering social involvement, establishing collaborations and overseeing all social involvement activities. Afeka’s numerous social involvement programs aim to impact Israeli youth by exposing them to the beauty of science, technology and engineering age-appropriate activities that are hands-on, enriching and fun. All social involvement activities are led by specially trained Afeka students. The students serve as role models to youth who lack confidence in their ability succeed in fields of engineering or in higher education in general, while at the same time financing their own education through scholarships. Afeka has already begun building tieswith schools situated near the newcampus. Themovewill provide us with an opportunity to show the level of impact a socio-educational ecosystem can have on a community.
